Still Deciding? Move Your Stuff

How do you move contacts, chats and data when switching phones?

Use the official transfer path for your direction and setup state. For Android to iPhone, Apple offers setup-time transfer through Move to iOS, and a compatible Android 17 device may support an app-free route. If iPhone setup is already complete, using that setup flow requires erasing the iPhone and starting over; selected content can instead be moved manually. For iPhone to Android, Google documents a separate setup flow whose supported data depends on the Android device, software version and transfer method.

What to do

  1. Back up both phones, charge them and check that the destination has enough storage.
  2. For Android to iPhone during setup, follow Apple’s transfer screen; check whether your Android device qualifies for the app-free route, otherwise use Move to iOS. A USB-C connection may be faster.
  3. If the iPhone is already set up, back up anything created on it before considering a reset, or follow Apple’s linked manual-transfer guidance without resetting.
  4. For iPhone to Android, follow the new Android device’s setup prompts, keep both devices connected and turn off iMessage as Google instructs. Some supported Android 17 devices can also copy data after setup.
  5. Verify contacts, photos, messages, WhatsApp, passwords and app sign-ins separately before retiring the old phone.

Limits and compatibility notes

Check this before relying on the answer Transfer categories differ by direction, phone, OS, app, setup state and cable or wireless method. Some free apps can be matched, but app data, purchases and active sessions are not universally transferable. WhatsApp has its own requirements. eSIM/phone-number activation is separate from content migration. Do not erase a phone until its new data has been backed up and checked.
